Creating safe environment for the children
One of the most important duties of every parent, whether it’s expecting parents or already a parent, is to create a safe environment for the child. The concept of creating a safe environment has been quite overrated these days that sometimes we tend to overlook it in our practical life.
Whenever your child hit a new milestone, take it as a sign to double-check your surroundings to ensure if it’s appropriate for them at the moment or not.
Some of the things that all parents should be aware of are listed below:
- Hot water, coffee, tea mug should not be placed on a low table where your child can easily grab a hold on,
- household cleaning products or any harsh chemicals should be kept outside away from your child’s reach,
- sharp items and tools such as scissors, knives, nail file, etc should not be placed close to where your baby spends most of their time,
- scented candles or incense sticks are not safe for your babies health so try to avoid it as much as possible,
- remove any broken chairs or tables and place another by child-proofing it,
- empty the wall above your baby’s cot and avoid putting anything decorative or even stuffed toys as it can fall over and cause serious injury,
- never leave your child unattended in a bathtub or anywhere slippery as they can slip and hit their head,
- mobile, laptop charger should be plugged off and kept away from your child’s reach.
These are only a few significant points that I’ve discussed above. There are even more things that need to be taken care of to provide safe surroundings for your child.
However, if you really want to protect your child then try to walk in their shoes and think like them. They are one of the most curious beings on this planet so, anything that shows red signal to you should be taken into consideration straight away.
Once your child grew up and could feed themselves well, make sure you become more alert. There are so many serious cases in the hospitals of children swallowing batteries, small plastic toys, whole grapes, anything they could hold of.
So, it’s better you put close-eye on what’s your child is putting on their mouth. Furthermore, try to remove anything that is hazardous in nature near to your child’s reach.
If you are a single parent, living away from your family or in a different country then raising a child can be even more challenging. You can’t always keep your eyes on your child all the time.
It’s when you have to think and act one step ahead from other parents. However, unfortunately, if something goes wrong, don’t blame yourself but instead, learn from your mistakes and be more cautious next time.
For an instance, you can learn basic child protection techniques, keep child first aid kit at hand, familiarise yourself of emergency numbers to dial in an emergency situation and to always ask for help.
When something goes really bad, these tips and techniques might not cross your mind. We tend to get scared, anxious and nervous in such situations which can make things even worse.
As it’s said that when the mother gets anxious, the child can sense it and they would act just like you. So, in such situations, you have to be really really calm and strong. Things will settle down on its own once the surrounding becomes calmer.
However, if you are alone and things doesn’t seem to settle down, just dial the emergency number. The help will be on its way soon.
Thus, providing a child safe environment is one of the utmost important responsibility of every parent. Try to mould the area as much as possible once they hit the milestone. Nobody is perfect here, accident happens, we cannot stop it but at least we can prevent it from happening.
