How to cut Newborns nail ?

Newborns nails are very thin and soft compared to that of the toddlers. Even though their nails tend to be soft, it can scratch their face or eyes which are very sensitive part of their body. If you’re a new mum then you’ll understand it’s quite difficult job as you don’t want to hurt your baby while cutting the nail. It’s alright to avoid carrying the process if you are not ready for at least one to 2 weeks until you are confident enough. However, you have to put the mittens and socks on to your baby to avoid any scratches which could cause an infection when it bleeds.

To avoid any cut or infection:

  • it’s safe to trim the nails while baby is asleepĀ or feeding as they tend to be more calmer than any other time of the day.
  • it’s even better if someone is with you for the help for holding their hands or merely if you need anything else.
  • trim their nails in the day time rather than evening or night for the safety purpose.
  • don’t bite their nails as it can transfer germs from your mouth to your baby easily.

What to use to cut the nail?

  • you can simply peel the ends of the nail with your fingers,
  • use baby nail clippers as their ends are rounder which avoid any deep cuts,
  • baby scissors with round ends are also useful
  • filing the nail is also useful as it also flatten the sharp ends of the nails after cutting.

What did I use?

I used baby nail scissor with rounder ends to cut my daughter’s nail. However, I avoided cutting her nail for the first few weeks as I was not confident enough. When she was born she had quiet a long nail so I used to put her in a mittens most of the time to avoid scratching herself. When she accidentally scratched herself, I cleaned the area to avoid any further infection.

As she is a toddler now, I use baby nail clippers when she is feeding or when she is asleep, it makes the process quite smooth. Sometimes when she is calmer in the day and less crankier, I would cut her nails by letting her know what’s coming so that she understands what I’m doing. She enjoys it sometimes but not every time, so it depends on how she is acting that day.
